Getting Teens Talking

Getting Teens Talking

From our friends at Axis

We’ve heard it from Young Life leaders and parents: what do I actually say to this young person?

There are few things more fulfilling than spending time with adolescents — the way they bring energy and life, the way they can illuminate the world, the questions they ask. It’s incredible to watch them grow.

And if you’ve spent time with them, you know there’s nothing more humbling. It may be a sarcastic comment. More often, it’s a one-word answer. Silence. You’re left wondering, Did I say something wrong?

The answer is they’re going through significant changes. Forming identities, asking questions, and coursing through these young people are some of the most significant physical changes they’ll face in their lives.

But that doesn’t mean the conversation has to end. You simply need to be thoughtful. The biggest tip: let them be the expert.

Ask about their Spotify playlists (they have dozens). What are they listening to recently? Why? Let them teach you about themselves with something that feels safe.

Beyond this, we have a parent guide — but really it’s for anyone who cares about adolescents. Young Life leaders. Uncles. Coaches. Grandparents. Teachers. It gives both principles to help you think, What should I say now? and some easy openers — questions that drive deeper than, How was your day?

Take a look, read it, and try it out! The teenager in your life will thank you (even if they never say it)!
