Young Life camps run so well because of the hundreds of men and women who are content to quietly serve behind the scenes. Alicia epitomized excellent service in her time working at camps and then training and leading others in their administrative roles. For 17 years, she ensured that the administration of camps would run smoothly so more kids could hear about the Savior.
Alicia worked tirelessly at Oakbridge, Young Life’s former WyldLife camp in California, and Rockbridge Alum Springs in Virginia, before moving to Colorado Springs to oversee the processes and policies for more than 25 camps.
Those whom Alicia supervised were quick to point out that she took her role seriously, but not herself:
“Alicia was first and foremost passionate about knowing Jesus and making him known. She led and loved others well, with joy, humor, and a willingness to go outside her comfort zone. She brought excellence and fun to all she did and all of us!” —Alison McCauley, South Central Division Camping divisional coordinator
“She was a great teacher and leader of our group! Alicia would give us rubber ducks and then say how important it was for us to ‘have our ducks in a row.’ I still have them today.” — Cindy Musselman, Midwestern/Northwestern Division Camping administrator
Ask her peers in camping what Alicia meant to them, and you hear words like: Dependable, humble, servant, available, encourager, genuine, and discernment. (Just to name a few.)
“Because of Jesus in Alicia, more administrative managers were trained, filled up and encouraged; more administrators were set up for success; more leadership strategies were formed, and more kids got to hear about the One who loves them and walk closer to him.” — Josh Smiley, enterprise architect, Mission Technology Ministry
Senior Vice President of Camping Chad Sievert said this about his friend and co-laborer:
“To know Alicia was to witness a life rooted deeply in Jesus. She saw administrative work not as routine, but as a quiet, powerful way to pursue kids with intention and care. As a gifted thought partner, she helped shape and improve the future of Young Life Camping with wisdom, passion, and grace. Her example remains a guiding light for us all.”
Following her time in Young Life, Alicia continued to minister to others, through her role as the Front Range Alliance Church administrator, and as a chaplain at LaVista Correctional Facility in Pueblo, Colorado. There will be a memorial service honoring Alicia on Saturday, September 26, at 2 p.m. at Front Range Alliance Church in Colorado Springs.
