INTENTIONAL HANDOFFS

Leveraging 400% Database Growth to Keep Graduates Connected

Today’s young people crave authentic, in-person community over digital substitutes, but major life transitions like high school graduation can be hard. Consider this:

  • College can be lonely: Over 60% of college students report experiencing overwhelming loneliness during their freshman year as they transition away from established support networks.
  • Search for authenticity: Only 50% of young adults feel worthy of being loved, making authentic, close relationships essential for building healthy self-concept.
  • Desire to find “your people”: Students who form at least two close friendships during their first semester are 40% more likely to persist and remain enrolled through their college years.

Meanwhile, there’s a growing interest in finding a faith community.

  • Curious About Jesus: 77% of Gen Z express a positive view or active curiosity about the life and teachings of Jesus.
  • Pursuing community: Despite digital distractions, 54% practice spiritual disciplines and 71% follow their family’s religious affiliation, showing an openness to spiritual community.
  • Talking about Faith: 68% of young adults report an openness to discussing spiritual topics and faith with friends who hold different beliefs.

Young Life is positioned to meet them in these areas. As you may know, Young Life spans an 11-year window of adolescence:

  • Junior High (three years) – WyldLife
  • High School (four years) – Young Life
  • College (four years) – Young Life College

Throughout these stages, Young Life leaders focus on intentional handoffs at each transition to stay connected and live out the core value of being “friends for life.”

Relationships require time, effort, and faithfulness. In the U.S., we know over 650,000 students by name, including 100,000 graduating high school seniors, nearly 40,000 of whom attended a Young Life camp. Young Life staff and leaders work to stay connected with graduates as they transition to college, military service, gap years, and the workforce. With over 180 Young Life College groups nationwide, we set three simple goals:

  1.  Identify high school grads who engaged with Young Life in junior high or high school
  2.  Find out their next steps
  3.  Stay connected and, when we know, meet them when they get there!

Tracking students across transitions is also challenging so we returned to Young Life’s core relational practices:

  • We celebrated graduating seniors at their local Young Life club during the spring semester.
  • We texted and emailed each senior a one-minute survey to remain in touch.
  • At all summer camps, we conducted a simple meeting for graduates to communicate continued relationships. The results? In 2026, the list of graduating seniors grew by 400%.

Our intentional approach follows the model of Jesus, who made himself available to seek out others and walk with them. As we celebrate this season’s progress, global efforts are expanding — over 80% of the 4.5 million students we know by name live outside the United States.

Being known and supported within a value-aligned community is vital.

To support this exponential growth, Young Life enhanced its technology to help collect graduate information and connect students wherever they may go.
