July 24, 1991 – March 2, 2026
A bright light in our ministry in Uganda is now shining in the presence of his Savior. Romeo Semambo’s influence in his country is profound. As an area director in charge of the work in Southern Uganda, he oversaw the rapid growth of the ministry there, which at the time of his passing included:
- 13 ministries in the Mukono area
- 2,750 kids known by name
- 210 volunteer leaders
But these numbers only tell part of the story. Romeo loved Jesus, and he loved people. He longed to introduce kids to the King through Young Life, so they may walk in relationship with him. Maybe that’s because he remembered how the Lord used the mission in his own life when he was a teenager.
Romeo was raised in a Muslim household and identified as a Rasta when he began coming to Young Life club in Makindye in 2012. Shortly thereafter, Romeo went to camp where he began a relationship with Jesus.
Romeo’s leaders quickly recognized his ability to influence others and encouraged him to join them in reaching other teenagers for Christ. Romeo also heard the Lord calling him into this role, so he went through Young Life leadership formation and became a volunteer leader.
His supervisor, Augustine Okudel, remembered his friend’s impact on others: “He helped me begin the first club, which then gave birth to all the neighborhood clubs in Makindye area.”
Romeo faithfully volunteered for seven years before joining staff on July 1, 2019. Augustine described his friend as “a cheerful and friendly person who had a pure heart to love and build teams.”
Our prayers go out for all those who loved and were loved by, Romeo Semambo.
